What is Chainmaille?

Terminology

About the Word

Chainmaille goes by many names, depending on where it's used. When referenced in most TV shows or movies, it is called Chain Mail, Chainmail or simply Mail. Technically both Chain Mail and Chainmaille are correct, however Chainmaille is the preferred term by many who create this unique material. We use this preferred term across the site, however you can choose to read or pronounce Chainmaille however you like.

Weave Names

Individual weave names are generally decided by the person who first brings the weave to the attention of other chainmailliers. There is no official repository of chainmaille weaves, however the weaves archive available at The Maille Artisans International League is chiefly regarded as one of the best available.

The only part of a weaves name that follows a naming convention is the "X in 1" portion. This simply means that each ring will have X other rings passing through it when the weave is completed.

Construction

In it's most basic form, Chainmaille is nothing more then a series of interwoven rings.
